iMac - Soon to be proud owner of 24" iMac!

I just ordered by first Mac, it's a 24" iMac:

2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
NVIDIA GEFORCE 7600 GT w/256
500GB Serial ATA Drive
SuperDrive 8X (DVDR-DL/CD-RW)
Wireless Keyboard and Wireless Mighty Mouse

This will be my first Mac ever. I used to HATE Macs, especially back in the early OS 9 days. I used to be the computer tech at a school with about 500 macs and 500 PCs. I couldn'd stand working on the Macs, and always felt like they took so much more work to keep running.

Fast forward several years, and the world of Macs have changed quite a bit. They're running Intel processors, and running a new OS based on UNIX. I especially like the ability to run WinXP, and like the setup of this particular generation of iMacs. I decided to give the 24" iMac a shot... I've never really used OS X, and plan on running WinXP most of the time, but I'm willing to dabble on the Mac side. I'm excited!

Estimated shipping is Oct 13... I can't wait!

A few years ago I had never touched a mac but after pursuing my studies in design I fell in love the first time I used one. My fist mac was a bog standard edu emac which didn't really fulfil my needs but was all I could afford. 3 years down the line and I have just recieved my imac 24 and would never go back to pc. You'll love it I assure you plus the obvious aesthetically pleasing look will make your friends wish they had one! Dirty pc's lol

That's like buying a really fancy toaster and only using it to warm your hands. Since you are making a big investment, take the time to learn how to get the most out of it. Start buy spending a little more money and buying Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Tiger Edition by David Pogue. Next, challenge yourself to spend two weeks not using XP for anything that has a Mac equivalent. Explore the iLife apps. There is nothing like them on Windows.

After that, if you still want to run XP all the time go ahead. Most switchers wind up doing the opposite, however. Best wishes

Welcome. I bet you'll get your computer sooner then the ship date. I did. Well I hope you do. BTW, your comp is nearly identical to the one I ordered 2 weeks ago. It came this Wednesday. I literally have not gotten a full night of sleep since getting it...been tinkering with settings, etc...its an awesome screen and it is blazing.

I agree with you on this... I was a hardcore PC supporter and i just switched on Saturday to a 2' iMac. I'm not even installing bootcamp until i find something i absolutely can't do with OS X.

Seriously though, the unit you just purchased is a great configuration. I think you'll be happy that you chose 2GB RAM and that graphics card is fantastic - I have one in one of my computers.

I admit to using Windows - I have to at work - but I use Windows mostly for games that aren't available on the Mac. My favorite game, World of Warcraft, runs nicely on OS/X though and I think this will be the trend in high end games. I enjoy OS/X too much to spend time on Windows for anything new that I'm working on though.

I'd been a long time Mac supporter, but had all but abandoned the Mac platform about the time I got a copy of XP.

A little over a year ago I got ahold of a Mac and a copy of OSX 10.3.. and I haven't looked back.

On the rare occasions I have to sit down at an XP machine, it makes me wanna puke.

I'm not into video games, and everything I did on a PC, there's either a MacOS X version, or an equivalent program that works even better.

Seems kind of pointless to buy an Intel Mac and run nothing but XP on it.. I mean, why not just buy a PC?

Not to rain on your parade ripfrankwhite, but shipping times for something like a new Mac never seem to go fast (at least for me). But just keep in mind that what you have on its way is well worth the wait.

Woohoo! My iMac arrived early! It arrived last friday, which was about one week ahead of the estimated delivery date.

I've been loving it so far. I think I've pretty much figured out the basics on the OS. There's some things I like, and some things I don't. One thing I've noticed, it seems OSX doesn't multitask quite as effectively as WinXP. When I have a few applications running, the system seems to randomly slow down and give sluggish response. I very rarely experience that with WinXP.

I already installed WinXP on the iMac... mostly to run games. I love the performance! I ran Call of Duty 2 at maximum resolution with all the settings turned to high, and it runs very smooth!
