Hello,

Yesterday I was watching a film via VLC when the right fan on the iMac began blowing extremely hard and loud. I've never seen it do this before.
I checked activity monitor but showing 85% idle. I closed VLC and eventually it stopped.

Now, whenever I go on something with audio, the right speaker starts buzzing. Stops about 20 seconds after the audio ends. The speakers also sound muffled.

Stops when I plug the headphone jack in.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Your issue "sounds" like a blown/damaged speaker.

Is it possible that the loud fan that you heard, was not the fan at all, but the speaker simply making bad noises (the cone or other parts failing)
The sound would stop when you plug headphones in - because the internal speakers are bypassed when headphones are used.
Another possibility is that the audio amplifier failed (maybe overheating at that time), with a sudden temp spike that caused the fan near that audio chip to go crazy. That probably would not be reflected in any way by the Activity Monitor.

Some iMacs have replaceable audio boards. Which iMac do you have?
