We will mainly game, watch videos on the internet, and listen to music. Are the speakers that are in the iMac decent? I don't need an epic aural experience just something of a reasonable quality.

They have pretty good quality and sound, i think they will serve your purpose just fine. If you're near an apple store swing by and crank one up, they usually have all kinds of media on them in the store :)

Certainly not an epic aural experience, decent at best.
I think for a couple of bucks it would be worth it to spent it on a pair of external speakers or maybe a subwoofer to at least get some bass!

I have my iMac connected to my stereo amp, so I can run the music through my speakers, makes a lot of difference.

Most of them at the store have external speakers hooked up, maybe that's a sign. Right now I have a nice Logitech 4.1 system but they are old and dying. My TV has built in speakers but in games I can still tell when people are in front, behind, or to my sides when they walk around. I don't know how it's done but my TV is pretty good so I imagine this should be fine hopefully.

For the size of the speakers and where they are pointed, they do a decent job.

The iMac speakers are okay for getting by. They make me cringe when listening to music through them though :( Depends how important sound quality is to you.

For me, they are good enough for listing to music and watching videos. I actually just sold my external speakers, because I didn't need them anymore.

I don't understand why everybody is always bitching/hating about the iMac speakers, because they do a good job!
Most people still listen to 128-192 kbps MP3s, so what's the point in having cutting-edge and expensive speakers, if the output sucks badly!

Switch to a lossless format, if you want better sound quality! :D
You'll hear a big difference, even with the built-in iMac speakers.

The internal speakers in my new iMac sound decent for watching internet video's.

For music they sound only slightly better then the average clock radio sounds.

My second day with the iMac I connected it to a stereo receiver and speakers in my home office.

They are better than most built-in speakers.

I'd agree. IMO, they are considerably better than any built in computer speakers I've heard. But they are still built in speakers. Fine for listening to voice or online videos but they won't make the grade if you're a critical listener.

I don't consider myself to be a true audiophile, but to me music must be reproduced with a certain amount of bass, which the iMac's built in speakers simply do not deliver...
