I'm new to the iMacs and was wondering what we should expect CPU and gpu wise In the highest specced iMac. Also just to confirm the iMac has a desktop gpu and not a mobility one like in the mac mini correct?

It's currently a desktop CPU and expected to be one in the next release. Probably 69xx series mobility GPU.

imacs have mobile gpus, but desktop processors.

imacs use a mobility GPU. Not a desktop GPU. They do however use a desktop CPU.

As far as what you can expect, there are threads plastered all over the forums here with much speculation.

my geekbench score was 10600

i can get around 50-60 fps on most games, i did bootcamp and try out crysis, got 35 fps on max settings.

got a 27 inch i7 2.93 with 8gb ram and the 5750 1gb video card.

Why are iMac components so far behind PCs?

Why aren't iMac/Macbook components up-to-date with PC components? For example, up until last year, iMacs were shipping with Intel Core Duos, whereas the PC world was already long into i3,i5, and i7. Hard drives are another thing. PC hard drives are much faster than the basic drives Apple offers. Same with graphics processors.

Why is this? I don't mind paying more for a better built machine, but it's hard to ignore that Apple seems far behind the technology curve with their offerings.

Why can't they at least keep up with the technology?

Longer update cycle. Usually Apple's tech is fairly current when the model is released but it can stay like that for 9 months or more until the next model comes along.

The iMac was one of the first computers to use lynnfield chips when lynnfield was introduced. I'm not too sure about the old argument about apple computers not using up-to-date tech compared to pc counterparts. About the only argument you can truly make was their decision to stick to core2duo in their lowest end macbook/pro's, but that's because they didn't want to use the intel integrated graphics.

iMacs will certainly use sandybridge and mobility 6k come this refresh, and as flopticalcube says, the iMacs only seem behind because of their strict update schedule.

I heard that Apple will be trying to downgrade tech this go around. Floppy disk drive instead of superdrive. 1.44 mb storage bliss!

Sticking with C2D was justified because Arrandale IGP sucked hard and 320M is way better than it. HD 3000 is slightly better on non-CUDA apps than 320M.
