I have a one month old refurbished Late 2009 i7 quad core iMac that came with a Hitachi 2TB hard drive. I am new to Macs and I am wondering if the machine is performing as it should. It just feels a little sluggish to me, and I am coming from a 6 1/2 year old Dell running Windows XP.
I am not referring to the processing speed, but to the general opening of programs and windows, which I guess is more a function of the hard drive.
Whenever I have been at an Apple store or watched videos demonstrating the iMac, it seems as though most programs open very quickly and windows just pop up. When I open garage band, iMovie, iPhoto, I get a number of "bounces" (5 seconds or so perhaps?), before the program opens. When I open a window, such as in Finder if I am looking at the documents in a folder, it takes a couple of seconds for the icons to draw on the screen. The feeling of sluggishness is compounded, I think, because I can hear the hard drive working (a sort of soft, but noticeable, crunching or rumbling while reading/writing) None of this is terrible, but it just doesn't feel quite as quick as I would expect.
I wonder if I am expecting too much. Is there a way for me to get a sense of whether the operation of my computer is "normal" compared to other similar machines?
