I noticed lately my 2012 iMac stand no longer keeps the monitor in the same position I put it in. Normally in a couple hours it will be down as low as it can go.

Anyone else had this issue on older iMacs and any way to correct this or just keep moving it back up to where I want it every couple hours?

Sounds like your iMac's internal tilt spring is weak or broken. You might use a small piece of packing foam between the back of the iMac and the stand near the pivot point to support it at your desired angle.

A rectangular Kleenex box placed on the desk between the stand and monitor will hold the screen vertical, even if the tilt mechanism is completely broken. Please don't ask how i know :(

Edit: And it makes a great place to put an external Samsung T5 SSD when the spinning hard drive dies!

LOL! Kleenex box you say? I might sadly have to resort to that as well :(

Apple had a service campaign to address weak hinges in 2012-14 models with replacements.

However, it ended a couple years ago.

But it's still worth contacting Apple to see if they offer any goodwill assistance.

If not, there are kludge solutions on AMZ in the form of adjustable braces.

Hinge replacement is also possible, but requires extensive disassembly.

My 2012 27” iMac did the same thing. I got one of these and it works great.

hey, I’m 3d printing a Mac stand solution (which is off Thingiverse, I did not design this, only make and credit the designer!) which allows the screen to be tilted at any angle. Please check out my listing. EU only.

Actually I believe that the spring may be OK, it's the plastic clips that hold it in tension that might be failing, possibly the left or right one. Check out iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 Hinge spring caps Replacement. There are several sellers on eBay selling various fixes for this. This is something you may want to do if you're planning on opening it up to make other upgrades. Otherwise the external solutions that have been suggested here would be easier.
