Just recieved my new iMac 20". All unwrapped and shiny new mmmm. Booo, when I press the power button, all I get is three loud boops and a flashing light below the screen on the bottom right.

Nothing much you can do about that - take it back and get a new one, that iMac has some serious issues.

Sorry you had to go through this unfortunate experience - I hope it all gets sorted out for you very quickly so that you can start enjoying your new Mac!

Three beeps is a memory error. You might want to check that it's seated right before going through the whole return routine.

True, but depending how "DIY-adverse" he might be, this might be awkward for him to check. Otherwise, yes, you could pop it open and start poking about with the memory. :)

Definitely a good suggestion if taking it back is going to ultimately be a bit of a hassle. Try and do as much as you can first, but keep in mind you don't want to void your warranty either.... ;)

At least it's DOA, which means that Apple should take care to replace it quickly without asking too many questions.

Yeah, this is pretty straight forward as far as problems go - not much discussion or investigation required... ;)

Thank you for your support

Apple have agreed to exchange it for a new one ... apparently on its way :)

Have fun waiting again. ~Complete torture. Trust me, I know
Apparently, you have no good memory banks. Good luck with your next iMac G5!

1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
