iMac stuck in Black screen on reboots

Hi all!


I have a late 2009 i7 iMac that has been fine for what seems like forever (Purchased 10 years ago). It has a Samsung 830 SSD with the DVD drive delete so it also has a 2tb internally for data.

In the last about 4 months, it won’t reboot which means it won’t do any security updates (I’m on High Sierra). I can force power it off and turn it back on but it has to be forced off. It will boot up fine though.

I’ve tried unplugging all USB but that doesn’t seem to do anything.

Not sure if it’s a botched previous update or what but hoping someone can point me in the right direction. If I have to wipe the SSD and reinstall High Sierra new, I can but I’d like to avoid if possible. However, I will do what I need to do so I can update.

Try rebooting while holding CMD-V. Verbose mode may show you where it is freezing.

The internal hard drive could be getting "marginal". Not "failed" yet, but no longer as reliable as it once was...
