iMac stuck on blue screen at startup

Since May last year I am the owner of a 21.5" iMac. A couple of days ago I noticed there was an update and I had let it download. Because it was already late in the evening and the update was quite big, I had let my iMac download it to install it the next morning. The next morning I woke up the screen and pressed install. At some point the installation required an reboot and so I did. Since then I have the problem of my iMac get stuck at the blue screen on startup. However, I still can boot up in safe mode.

I am looking for a solution for this problem.

I have already tried a few things myself, but they did not help:
-Boot in safe mode and reboot
-Trying to reinstall OS X, it gives me the error: The installer could not copy the necessary support
-Booting with the installation CD and running the disk utility check at the first aid tab of my hard drive. Didn't gave me any errors during process but did not fix my problem
-Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
-Unplugging all cables and putting them back in

If anyone has a suggestion to fix this problem, it would be appreciated greatly. Thanks in advance!

I am joking, 'quite big update', probably OS X 10.6.7 update.
Very strange indeed, I would just say go to the genius bar at an Apple store...

try this:

(a) download the Mac OS X 10.6.7 Combo
(b) reboot into safe mode
(c) use disk utility to verify disk and repair permissions
(d) run the combo
(e) after running the combo, let the Mac reboot normally and, if it boots all the way into your desktop, repair permissions again.

This is something you need to do once you fix your broken computer. clone your hdd with superduper or carbon copy cloner. make two copies use this

buy two hdds and one thermaltake may a copy on the first and the 15 of every month rotate it and you will never have this problem again.

Tried but does not work. When running the combo it says that it can't be installed because it needs version Mac OS X 10.6.6 or older.

well, what version of OS X are you on ?

i assumed you were on 10.6.6 and tried to update to 10.6.7.

if you're on 10.5.x, repeat the procedure using the 10.5.8 Combo

if you are on Snow Leo, at this point I would try a repair install of the OS using the istallation DVD that came with your machine. there will be an option to preserve user and network settings or something along that line. once finished, run the 10.6.7 combo to bring your system up to date.

Before the update (and the problem) I had 10.6.6. After the update the problems came. In safe mode I have version 10.6.7. That's why the combo doesn't work I guess.
I already tried to do a repair install but gives me the error: the installer could not copy the support files.

assuming you have a backup of your important data, your best bet may be to wipe your boot disk and put a fresh copy of OS X on your machine.

That's a last resort for me, I'd rather not do that.. Also, in safe mode my flash player does not work in all my browsers when I have my Mac in safe mode. Reinstall did not solve the problem. Could this has something to do with it?
