Hi, just got my new 3.06GHz iMac and am loving it, everything seems fine, the screen is great and so on.

Just one thing though, I was starting to install a game under windows and when I put the disc in it spun and then I heard a clunk noise, I think the disc must have come off the spindle or something. The disc did eject fine and I looked at it, was a bit scratched but it may have been like that before. I insterted another disc and that one loaded up and installed fine without any problems.

My question is, could that disc coming off the spindle have stuffed up the drive in the long run or am I just being paranoid?

Thanks for your help.

I had a similar issue.

I was format shifting my commercial purchased dvd collection over to the iPod on the first day of owning my new mac and the disc went in and never mounted and I had the clunk and spin sounds.

I was not able to eject (even the stuck dvd method with the mouse button) and it took about 15 minutes to start up.

I spoke with a long time friend and an even longer time Mac tech and he advised me to have the DVD drive replaced since when they do it once its only a matter of time until they eat a disc you need.
