I'm looking to connect my 24" iMac (early 2009 model - 9,1) to Samsung HDTV mainly for watching movies.

Searching around drove me to these cables: audio and video

Will this combination work? is there better audio solution since RCA is not the best quality but all I have is the headphone jack on the iMac?

Thank you in advance

Those cables will work.

RCA is analog but good for many uses.

You iMac also has an optical out,

you need the following cable, if you have something with an optical in (SPDIF).

Thank you for your reply.

So the video option is all set. Now regarding the audio, here is a pic of the back panel of my tv:

One option is to use the red boxed connectors with the cables I linked above. Regarding the 2nd option, it says "Digital Audio Out" (the yellow boxed connector). It needs to say "Digital Audio In" for this to work, correct?

What's the point of having a "Digital Audio Out" on the TV btw?

Thanx again

Digital Out could be needed to transport audio digitally and with more than two channels to another audio unit like a receiver.

You seem to have an optical out though, left from the yellow circled optical audio out port.
One has a headphone symbol above it, one is beneath that.
Have a look at your TV's manual.

An optical audio port looks like this:

The yellow-boxed connector is the optical out, it does look like the connector u posted in the picture except that it has a cover. Also, the red beam is visible once the cover is pushed in. But again, it is "out".

Regarding the audio jack next to it, all the manual said is that it's used to connect the audio from PC to TV. It doesn't say if it's optical or not, but i'm assuming it's not since it looks nothing like the optical audio connector u posted. Even if I use that for audio, wouldn't I need to set the TV source to PC in order for that audio to work? which means I cannot set it to HDMI 1.

Looks like I can use the first option (the red-boxed) connectors and it should work just fine.

Thanx again for your help.

We were just talking about this in another thread. I have fairly new sony bravia with the same optical digital out in the back. According to tech support at sony, it does NOT pass anything other than a digital left and right, no 5.1, etc. It seems crazy to have that port out on the tv the a matching optical in my sony home theatre and it's only stereo. I can imagine how many people have hooked it up and thinking they are getting surround.
