I don't see the point. We have a couple of the HP touchsmarts at work and after playing with them for a while I hate the touchscreen. I don't see the need.
THAT'S EXACTLY THE POINT! Desktop touchscreens up til now have required you to stretch out your arm to make it work. This is pointless as its more effort than using a mouse. Think instead of having a computer as powerful as an iMac with the quality touch screen of an iPad in an actually usable position. Now that's something completely different from some crappy HP Touchsmart.
No thanks. If you use your keyboard for even normal use you'd find yourself keeping the screen in the extended, downward position, so having a flex base is a pretty retarded idea.

Obviously its not meant for typing out a long essay is it? But how about for photographic/art work? Video editing? Page layout stuff? Even music stuff? Plus it'd take a second to move up/down. Too difficult for you?
They'd definitely apply a oleophobic layer like on an iPhone. I'm sure there'd still be plenty of smudges but I can't see them on a half-bright iPhone screen. Think how the brightness of an iMac will eliminate any smudges
Maybe you should get some glasses. iPhones and iPads look horrible after only a few minutes of use. I don't want to imagine what an iMac screen will look like.
After 10 mins, you can't feel your arms. It's ridiculously painful. Also, it's unproductive because it's much slower to move your hands on 27" screen than a mouse or use a tablet. Another issue is that the OS must have been made for the touch, otherwise the icons are too small to touch. That would mean all software, not just the OS. Imagine Photoshop with its tiny buttons. Oh God that would be frustrating.
I can come up with more cons of touchscreen in iMac than I can come up with pros. It's simply useless.
Ok, let me try and break down your issues:
1) I honestly don't think it's gonna be that painful: you're not stretching out your arms for this, they are pretty much resting where they would be if you're using a keyboard. Also, what about all those iPad users? Similar scenario, I haven't seen too many complaints about using (more about holding the weight)
2) I don't think Apple would release this on the 27 inch right away due to cost of a touchscreen panel that large, more likely the 21.5 inch. That screen is a decent size but not huge to stretch your arms over.
3) Of course this thing would rely on decent software, its stupid if its iOS on there and equally pointless if its unmodified OSX, the articulation sensors would maybe resize buttons/sliders etc, maybe automatic resolution switching? Remember, Apple make the best small touchscreens capable of selecting small weblinks and buttons, so I'm sure that quality would transfer over.

With the screen on, I honestly cannot see any smudges on my screen from 3 inches away. Sure it'll look a bit messy when you turn it off, but screen cloth wipe + be a bit less OCD about it will help. I've seen people using screens coated in a layer of dust thick enough to write my name in, so this won't be that bad.
Viewing it in an angle like shown in the link would either force you to lean forward plus if it's glossy like it would likely be due touch, it would have terrible reflections due the angle
What's the point of doing all that work for ONE model and iMac doesn't even sell that well compared to lappies... It simply has no point. Yes, it's understandable that Apple is doing research on that matter as we speak but it doesn't mean that we will see it, at least any time soon. A multi-touch keyboard would be a lot cooler
My iPhone gets fingerprints even though I washed my hands every 10 minutes... Do you really want to clean it everyday? Or everytime you sleep or shut it down? Doesn't sound very ideal

I didn't think that him calling the idea "retarded" was particularly nice, so maybe I returned in kind. People are allowed to have viewpoints and discuss, this is what the forum is about, but can't I reply back?
How are my ideas inept? These are the tasks that 'pros' regularly use Macs for right? For example, many serious photoshoppers use Wacom tablets for editing, if somehow Apple could implement a similar system where you directly manipulate the images you're working on, I could see that being better. But then again, I'm not a professional artist.
Many of those other ideas could be improved by touch by having better control of a layout and less reliance on peripherals. Take Safari on an iPad, in many ways, its a superior experience than on a Mac because you get to directly interact with the stuff on-screen, for example my mum who doesn't have good accuracy with moving and clicking a mouse is quite adept at using an iPad. Think a bit outside your own perspective before dismissing ideas and threads.
Ok you got me, ceiling light reflections would be way more apparent with the screen tilted like that. And it might not be great for posture either.
This tech could be transferred to laptops when needed, I agree, an iMac isn't the most logical place to start.
As for a multitouch keyboard? That requires some serious engineering with haptic feedback or something to stop it being horrendous, can you really type so well that you'd know when you've hit the correct key without always looking down? Software correction can only go so far, and I don't want that on a serious keyboard. (I assume you mean some kind flat panel keyboard and not just a normal keyboard with a magic trackpad bolted on)
I don't think giving the screen a quick wipe every now and then will be that difficult, Steve Jobs isn't going to be held up by such a 'minor issue' when he's showing off some ridiculous touch demo on stage.
Someday, definitely. Maybe OS XI will be designed for touch?
I agree that it can be problematic and I do prefer a real keyboard over iPhone KB but iPhone's KB ain't that bad when you get used to it. This is something I can see in few years.
If Apple released something, it's often, if not always a great product. Apple never releases anything halfway done or a prototype, they are always well designed and working products.

I can see something like this in the future but this year sounds too early. Or maybe it will be a whole new product? MacTouch, anyone?
I would pass on the touch iMac. I use a touch screen at work and it is good for quick imput (button pressing) but precision work would be terrible. There is a reason graphic artists use a stylus pen on tablets and not fingers. So why not just get a tablet instead.
