I recently did a clean up of my mac and put items in my trash -- about 60 to be exact. When I actually go to empty the trash however it says that its deleting 55,000+ items. Why is this? It's taking HOURS to delete. The files I deleted were mostly old music files, movies, etc. No data files -- I'm puzzled. What is causing this?

If you delete a folder, each file is count as one item. Make sure secure erase is turned off from Finder's preferences as that will cause it to take a long time.

I wish you could selectively empty things from the trash instead of emptying the whole trash.

Then maybe you should make a pre trash folder on the desktop for things that you might want to keep. When I put things in the trash in my house, I'm not going to second guess and start digging things out ;)
