iMac turns on but shuts off rather than boots

hi,

i have a 24" 2.8/2gb/320/sd

when i press the power button, the fans turn on and it makes noise. it then makes the piano key noise and the white screen with grey apple comes up. however, rather than going to the next screen, it just turns off.

what do i do?
