I have been having trouble with this iMac on some of the OS updates. Specifically, the 10.13.6. It downloads the software, runs the install program, but when it is at the black screen with the white apple logo, the status bar gets to about the 75% (approx) level, it freezes up. I have had to restore from a Time Machine back up twice in the last couple of days.

The first time, I let it sit over night and it never moved, the last time, I didn't bother waiting that long.

Any idea what the problem could be?

Stats: 2017 iMac, 3.5 i5, purchased April 2018.
 
I've tried downloading the combo update and had the same thing happen,

I've tried First Aid, but running it doesn't seem to fix anything. :(
 
Another suggestion:

Boot to internet recovery (command-option-R).

Then, choose to re-install the OS.

It may re-install to 10.3.6.

I've tried downloading the combo update.
I 've tried downloading the entire OS from the app store and installing.
I've run First Aide to no avail.

At what point do I need to take this to an Apple Store (about an hour away). Is there anything else I can try before making that trek?

Try what I said in reply 5 above.

To better your chances to get 10.13.6 (which is now the standard installer posted at Apple), I'd suggest that you do the following:
1. Use either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to create a bootable clone of your internal drive (on an external drive). Both apps are FREE to download and use for 30 days.
2. Unplug the cloned backup and set it aside for now
3. Boot to internet recovery
4. Open Disk Utility and ERASE the internal drive (make sure you erase the ENTIRE drive, not just the boot partition)
5. Quit DU and open the OS installer. Re-install the OS
6. Let it boot and begin setup
7. At the appropriate moment, setup assistant will ask if you wish to migrate from another Mac or drive. YES you want to do this.
8. Connect the external cloned drive
9. Tell setup assistant to migrate everything
10. Let setup assistant do its thing -- it will take some time.

If this doesn't do it for you, two choices:
1. Let 10.13.5 alone, and just use it
or
2. Take it to the Apple Store.

I've tried what you listed in #5 above, and I cannot get to my HD to make a clone of it. At the moment, I am reinstalling the OS via recovery mode, and if past history is any guide, I will be restoring from a Time Machine back up. We'll have to see what happens after that.
