Updated to 10.4.10 today on intel imac. When go to login, it will login then load the wallpaper (some of the icons on a rare instance) then it will log back out to the login page.

I tried booting into single user mode and getting in through that way and had no success. I tried to boot into safe mode and it kicks me out even quicker. I do not have an intel based imac hardware discs to run a hardware test to repair permissions (which I think would fix it).

Has anyone had this problem? Any suggestions to fix it?

That is a major bummer. A couple of things to try:

1. Boot from your OS X install CD/DVD that came with your mac and launch Disk Utility to see if you can repair it that way.

2. If you have another mac (or can borrow one), boot your mac in target disk mode and connect it to the other mac to run Disk Utility.

3. Most difficult - if you can manage to boot to a shell prompt, try running the disk utility from the cl. I don't know the specific command for disk repair, but it must be somewhere on the web.
