I'm thinking of buying a iMac 5k, but I also want to use the iMac as a second screen for my MBP.

If I understand correctly this was possible till iMac 5k Late 2014.

Does anyone have a solution for this (besides Remote Desktop applications)?

Since the 5k iMac was announced in 2014, the 27" iMac no longer supports Target Display Mode. Outside of software screen sharing solutions, there isn't much you can do.

Your only option is to wait for the new iMac. There is the possibility to see target display again thanks to thunderbolt 3.
