Can someone help me please. I was looking at the specs of the new Studio Display and beyond the larger size is there any advantage in buying one of those (to use with my MacBook Pro) rather than an iMac.

It seems to me that if I got the Studio display (and then had to buy a keyboard and mouse separately). It would cost almost twice the price as an iMac for an extra 3 inches of screen size plus I’d have the hassle of connecting my laptop every time I wanted to use it. Am I missing something?

Many thanks,

Daniel

I think its a higher quality screen, but if that doesn't bother you then the iMac is a good option. Just make sure you add any RAM and SSD upgrades to your total iMac price.

A 5k 27" screen is a totally different beast than what is in a 24" iMac. If you want something to use with your MacBook Pro, there are some great 27" 4k monitors for a lot less than either of the options you mention.

Like any decision, it depends on your specific use case. Would an entirely separate computer, syncing via iCloud or whatever suit your purposes? What are the specs on your MacBook Pro, and can the performance be matched by an iMac? Are there other alternatives, outside either iMac or Mac Studio Display that should be considered?

It's a really really good question.

I'm using a 14" MBP + Studio Display. Great combo.

BUT I'm starting to think I should have just bought a 24" 16GB 512GB iMac ?

If you don't need the extra couple of inches and don't need the portability, buy the iMac!
