Hello Friends,

I've got an existing late-model MBP that I use with a nice 24" Dell monitor. I'd recently decided to to move up to a desktop machine, and my thought had been to get a Mac Mini, buy another Dell 24" machine, and be happy.

Now this new iMac business is making me reconsider. The Mac Mini configuration I was looking at would have been about $1,200 (including the new monitor), and if I spend just another $300 to get the mid-range iMac I can get a dedicated video card, a faster processor, and double the hard drive space.

So...is there anything I'm missing? Any reason I should get that Mac Mini and another Dell monitor instead of getting the mid-range iMac?

Thanks, Matt

Mini is the better value in price/performance, and with the choice of any monitor now and into the future. It's small, sleek, quiet, and doesn't overheat. It can become your HTPC for your flat panel TV. It fits anywhere with its small, portable footprint. It's just more practical.

With the iMac, if unhappy with dead pixels or have a display failure... you're stuck.

No reason to get the mini. Its really old technology and a poor value.

well if you look at other pc's of its nature its really not a bad deal. If you just want a computer for web surfing, light photoshop work and light use then a mac mini is great.

i'd go with 21.5 imac.... little bit smaller screen, but you need to buy no peripherals and the power will be so much greater

In my opinion, the only reason not to move to the iMac is if you can't afford it. To me the iMac is the better option.

The Mini is very much an entry point for people to the "Mac world", 2nd Mac, etc. That being said, as others have commented, its internals are very similar to the MacBook Pros (at least the 13" with the 9400M graphics card) and the iMacs excluding the Quad Cores, i7's, etc. I found it a good value as a 2nd Mac considering I had 2 LCD's and I use an Adesso keyboard with a built-in trackpad (thus didn't need the keyboard and mouse that come with the iMac anyway).

The dual video ports are handy if you have multiple LCD's...

I do like the new 27" iMac and thinks it's a good value. I'm not sure I love the idea of the computer being embedded in the monitor - it means you're "stuck" with the Monitor and if the PC dies, so does the monitor, etc. Then again, I've had my Dell 24" now for 3 years and I still love it (though itching for that high-res 27")
