Ok i'm in a position of ordering an imac with 2100 euro but I do quite a lot of video card intensive stuff and I'm just debating at the moment whether to buy now or wait. Frankly I think the video card option in the current imac are a disgrace.

So I think the only way I'll buy an imac is if the update involves.

3.0Ghz 1333Mhz 6mb cache, C2D Processor (will it happen? )
Ram doesn't matter however anyone see a speed boost to 800Mhz?
HDD is fine in the current one
The HD 2600 PRO is terrible and I'm hoping for the 3870 XT 512MB does anyone see that happening?

I'm content to buy and XPS 630 from dell if they don't update it as it's more of a work computer but I would like to keep my collection of imacs going. Anyone see this kind of update happening?

They're not going to suddenly using desktop processors when the new mobile Penryns are a drop in.

It'll be the same DDR2-667 SODIMMs

Same as always

They haven't upgraded the GPUs during a processor revision yet. Not to mention the thermal profiles for the iMac are getting tighter.

Sorry mixed up there I'm meant the 3600 from ATi. And the C2E penryn Extreme are running at that Core 2 Extreme QX9650.

The Mobility HD3650 is possible but highly doubtful. There might even be a decrease in performance as well when compared to the current Mobility HD 2600XT in the iMac.

The iMac uses mobile processors and isn't even close to being able to handle that 130W monster. The Core 2 Extreme X9000 (44W) is the best you can hope for. The performance isn't remarkable over the current X7900 though.

The current iMacs use the 2600 PRO with 256 VRAM they're actually worse then the XT that is offered in the base imac but that only has 128 VRAM.
Yes for some reason I was looking at Quad core processors there :p can you imagine one of those in an imac. And yes the X9000 doesn't really offer much of a performance increase however to quote intel "It has a 17% increase in Performance over the X7900 in Cinebench." :D

i agree that its not going to really be anything exciting in this update, but theres nothing really wrong with the current model.

The iMac does not have a 2600 PRO, we have found out, here at macrumors, that the iMac has a 2600 XT mobility. i expect a 512MB vram option in the 24" models.

Chip IDs identify the cards as Mobility HD2600 XT parts. They have been downclocked to the upper end of desktop Pro speeds. The base iMac uses a Mobility HD2400 XT which is a totally different beast in both architecture and clock speed and underperforms the HD2600 XT, regardless of memory size.

As I have pointed out, here is the thread with all the information on this topic:
