My brother went to the dump the other day to get rid of some stuff and this older lady driving a Mercedes dropped off an iMac box with a 24" iMac in it the white one 2.16 most likely. From talking to him on the phone it sounds like the screen on it is cracked. Are there any good places to by a replacement screen for it for cheap? I looked everywhere and the only thing I found was on ebay for like $200 and the bid still had like 5 days on it. Also I will test it with an external monitor hooked up to it and see what else may be broken on it before I tell him to buy a new screen for it.

I told him if the screen costs anywhere from $600-$800 it's worth it since I still see them selling on ebay for $1200-$1600. It would even be worth it just to turn around and sell it on ebay for that matter.

Sorry that I don't have an answer for you but I do think that it's awesome that you got that for free. Go you!

PS - An external monitor would be my suggestion. I'm not sure about replacing screens on iMacs.

someone needs to educate miss mercedes on recycling computers... what an idiot.

if i were you, i'd call apple and see how much they would charge you for installing a new screen... who knows, that woman sounds pretty dumb so she probably has 3 year apple care and doesn't even know it. since the 24" white iMacs are from September 2006, it will probably be still covered if there's apple care attached to it.

That is just hilarious!
im sorry i dont have anything useful to say, see if you can convince her to give you her Mercedes to!

I thought about doing this but wouldn't apple tell us to take a hike, since the screen has obvious physical damage? That would be cool though if they do replace it for free or even just a labor charge. I found one place that has a screen but they charge $750 if you send them your old one or $840 if not.

I would check if it was missing any components like the hard drive, ram, etc.
Then see if it has Applecare.

If it has all those things, I would suggest connecting it to an external monitor first to see if nothing else is broken.

If it works with the external, then I would fix the screen.

If the old woman didn't wipe the hard drive, I would wipe it first also.

This is my plan but you think Applecare would replace the screen if it has obvious physical damage done to it?
