i know the website says 3gb
but like the mac mini

if i put in 2x2gb ram, will it recognize it a little more than 3gig?

I had 2 x 2 GB in my white iMac before I sold it. The computer "recognizes" all 4 GB, which is to say that "about this mac" displays 4GB installed.

Activity monitor also displays 4GB, however, if you add up the "wired"/"active"/"free" etc...the math doesn't add up to 4.

My understanding is that the system will actually address 3.3 GB.

The OS will use not more than 3.3GB .7 will go unused. But I think you gain a little because with matched RAM sticks the system can do double wide memory access, I think the speed gain from that is about 6%

Like the above posters said, you can put in 4 GB but it will only address roughly 3.3 but the matched pairs will help.
