I have yet to see the 'slimmer' iMac's as yet, but I hated the Rev A G5 imacs. They looked lovely in screenshots and on paper, but when I saw one in the flesh I was completely turned off. It was blocky and ugly, the huge white drop below the screen just seems so out of proportion.... Much prefered the G4 imac than that.. Which leaves me with a problem.

I cant decide whether to go for the macbookpro or the imac. Both are about the same spec wise (well apart from bigger screen / bigger hd etc..) so my decision is down to aesthetic at this point.

Is the slimmer model a noticeable improvement, or does it still look like a fat bloated ACD? Has the wide thick drop beneath the screen been lessened?

Chances to get to see one of these in the flesh is slim so your opinions are appreciated before I order one way or the other..

I would say it appears alot sleeker that the rev.a - the back is really nice - to me it is a beautiful machine.

if you told me 12 months ago that they would have a dual processor (albeit on one chip) that is pretty close in performance to the powermac dual 2.3 with a fast card like the x1600 256mb inside a 1.5 inch form factor AND a twenty inch screen at that price

i would have called the nuthouse.

I would say that the rev B and "rev C (Intel)" is definitely a little sexier than the rev A. Notice that I said "a little sexier." Don't confuse that with "a lot sexier." They look pretty much the same except the rev A did look the "boxiest."

So yeah, it's a bit sexier, but I still prefer brunettes.

Thanks bakedbeans :) That does make it look good..

What to do? I'm returning the 15"powerbook so it that refund that's paying for the imac or macbookpro...

I have to upgrade m imac G4 this year as it's getting a little on the slow side with pro-tools in the studio (and I had planned to replace this with the intel imac), so I think I'll order the iMac 2ghz now and if in 5-6 months time I really cant stand looking at it, I'll move it down into the studio, sell the iMac G4 & put the extra change into a new laptop. Hopefully by then a 13" widescreen duo-core will be available..

Then Jan 07' I'll buy a new Intel (memron) PowerMac to replace my Dual G5 (my applecare will just run out then)..

Seem's like a sensible roadmap for my needs.....

Unless you really need the portable power (like a photographer might) then no real need to sacrifice things - the imac really grows on you... its a beautiful machine... awesome to use

Also - this thing is a powerhouse. It can really compute by the sounds of things (this will only get better and better as time goes on). I would be bold enough to say it will be faster than your dual 1.8 g5

I'm under the impression that these new Intel Macs are going to outperform most of the G5s once apps become optimized for the new Inter architecture.

Yeah - that seems to be the general consensus. Steve said that EACH core was faster than the G5 2.1 and that there is two of them - making it roughly like the 2.3 powermac.

When you couple that with the 20inch screen - its one hell of a bargain.

Thanks bean :D You've been mega helpful today. Thanks a lot.

So it's ordered.. iMac 20" Duo Core 2ghz, 1gb x1, 250HD, 256mb Gfx

+ I ordered the Harmon Kardon SoundSticks II as they were cheaper when buying with a new mac

I considered the 500GB HD, but wasnt worth the BTO cost, an extra 250GB HD is cheaper as an external, and i'll order 1gb extra from crucial.

If it's as fast as my dual G5 I'll be in high heaven.. Even though I'll be upgrading that next year..
