Alright well last year I switched my parents from a gateway that was constantly a new problem and was a terrible piece of junk. They bought an iMac. Only 1 problem within a year which was the optical drive quit working...now problem 2:
Last nite my dad was transferring some pictures from a kodak cd and the computer froze and then it wouldn't boot. He came and told me, so a little later I went and booted it, everything was fine. This morning it wouldn't boot, and I got it to boot around 6pm tonight, but all I was able to do was get to the login screen before the computer locked up. To me, it sounds like one of the files off the cd is corrupted and it has totally locked down the computer.
Either the computer will boot and lock up, it will give the chime sound which sounds like someone is crumpling a bag of chips, or the computer will not even boot though the fans will run and the light in the front will be on.
So far I've tried to call applecare and she told me to reboot the computer, pop off the back and try to restart the lcd, and tried to do a force boot. I later tried to do the force boot, tried to do a hardware test (now the hardware cd is inside the computer and I can't get it to let it out), I tried to boot the computer up in target mode to salvage the files and I've tried to Single user boot the computer.
