Hi,

I do support work, and went to someone's house the other day for an iMac 27", not sure which one exactly.

It turns it on, chimes, then goes to the white screen with grey apple logo, then it stops there. While frozen there, I hear the harddrive continue to make noise.

Couldn't get in to safe mode with Shift key, nor Command-R for a recovery partition.

My Macbook Pro broke a while ago, never got it replaced, and have been using a laptop running Linux. Roommate has Macbook Air though, in case I need it to make a boot USB/

I am hoping to create bootable media to diagnose and perhaps fix the issue. I went to the Apple Store, and they would not sell me anything for this.

Can someone recommend something that I can download, preferably for a low price or free, that I can use to diagnose and perhaps fix the issue, and, if I do, will the iMac read from the USB right away?
