imac won't recognize a blank dvd+r

Other user accounts on this machine are not having this problem. I successfully burned a dvd+r yesterday. It recognizes a blank cd. We recently had a big problem (self-inflicted) that required an archive/install, and it has taken some time to get the permissions right again. Could this be a permissions problem?
It's an os x 10.4.11 with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846.

DVD problems

I've been having trouble burning DVD's from the finder. I can burn from iDVD
and burn CD's, but DVD's from the desktop isn't working.

It plays them well.

BTW, how did you figure it out?
