I've been having startup and sleep issues with my new iMac. It looks like I'll have to take it in for servicing after all. It's kind of disappointing since I bought it in July. I reinstalled the OS, which didn't work, then did a clean install, wiping the hard drive...still no go. What the heck could it be? The Applecare tech had me put it to sleep on Safe Boot, which DID work. Anyone else have this happen?

Did AppleCare have you use the Console program (in your Utilities folder)? If you click on "All Messages", it should give some more technical detail as to what's actually waking it back up.

Did you install any programs after the clean install?

You might have a program that re-wakes the unit for network access, background processing, ect....

Some printers, certain mice, and other USB peripherals can prevent sleep. Disconnect everything and see if it will sleep. If so, connect one device at a time and retest until you find the culprit.

It can also be requests on the network (this gets me more often than not). You can check for that by disconnecting your network and testing. Also some programs can prevent sleep, like iTunes.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. It seemed like I was on the phone all afternoon with Applecare! I finally got transferred to a senior advisor, who eventually suggested the clean install. We tried everything before doing this, including disconnecting all except for the power cord. This did resolve the problems I had with start up yesterday, but not the sleep issue.

If certain devices trigger the computer to get out of sleep, how can this be resolved? It would be quite the inconvenience to have to plug them in only when you need them. There weren't any new applications after the clean install. I'm taking it in on Monday if this isn't sorted out by Sunday.

BTW, does Time Machine also back up the email program? Hope so, I didn't get a chance to transfer it over to another drive.

Sometimes putting the device on a USB hub solves the problem. Other times you just have to replace it with another model.
