iMac won't start

I've had my Fall '09 iMac since last December and it has worked perfectly until this morning. It was in sleep mode when went to bed lastnight, but would not respond this morning. After powering it down, upon restart nothing happens other than I can hear the fan running. Any suggestions or thoughts before I get to the Genius Bar this evening?
 
Thanks, I've tried them all, still nothing. Hear the start up chime and then nothing but a black screen.

I've backed up with Time Machine regularly, should I be OK data wise?
 
If you can hear the startup chime, but get nothing on the screen, it could be a bad video card issue. this happened on my ill fated 8600GT macbook pro. Only resolution for that was a complete logic board replacement. Your data should be OK. If you have another mac, see if you can access the hard drive via firewire. I learned this after my issue (though my data stayed intact after the repair). I think it's called target disc mode. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
 
Thanks, I don't have another Mac. Guess I'll see what the Genius says tonight.
 
Good luck. Your data should remain intact as long as the hard drive didn't crash. I didn't lose anything when my logic board got replaced.

Update from Genius Bar last night:
They kept my Mac, estimate 5-7 days, the Genius ordered ram, logic board, and a new backlit panel. Thankfully it was within the year warranty...parts ordered show a cost of $1736, not including labor. AppleCare = totally worth it
