So I'm a Mac user going back to the Mac Plus, LC, IIci, etc. I just bought a 27" iMac i7 and upgraded it to 12gb and manually moved over my documents/application/etc files carefully as I was moving from a very old Powermac dual G5.

The machine is PERFECTLY stable when I sit at it...In fact I've used it for several hours in a row with no issue.

HOWEVER, when I walk away and come back it won't wake up! It SEEMS to still be running as it is very warm, but it won't let me wake it back up. Mouse, nothing. Keyboard, nothing. Power button, nothing! I MUST force a reboot!

Memory seems to test fine with Memtest 4.22 and Cocktail has been run.

WTF?!?

Ideas?

Before resetting PRAM which people here seem to be obsessed with do you have any USB devices besides your keyboard and mouse connected?

This is a bit old but may generate some ideas.

Cheers

Thanks...I'll try it when I get home....

Weird thing is I left my iMac at the LOGIN screen today and it had a black must restart box over the login box when I got home and I had to force a shutdown with the power button to just log in!

Memtest has run and is coming up clean on all 12gb....

WTF?!?

Did you try SMC and PRAM reset? If you did, run Hardware Test and Disk Utility.

Will run hardware test tonight.

Last night: turned off "wake on bluetooth, wake on network" set computer sleep to never, screen to 20min, screen saver to 10 minutes.

Zapped SMC/PRAM. Removed all extra USB devices/hubs.

Initially woke fine with keyboard movement, then this morning, won't wake up again...

ugh

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong, but could this be a permissions issue? I had a problem just like this on an old PowerMac G4 running 10.3. When the computer went to sleep (either manually or automatically) when i tried waking it, i would get an error message saying it had to restart. I repaired the disk permissions and it has worked great ever since then.

Since you said you manually moved over files from your old G5, maybe some of the permissions got screwed up. Maybe a repair of the disk permissions is in order. This can be done through Disk Utility. There is an option to check the permissions, so maybe try that first.

Again, i could be wrong, and someone please correct me if i am.
