iMac x iTunes x Home Theather

Hello,

I am a new one in Mac World. I need some help! One month ago I bought a iMac 20'' 2.66Ghz.

My iMac is in my office. In my living room I have a Sony LCD 46'' and the Home Theather.

- Is it possible to listen to musics that I have in my iTunes (iMac) using my Home Theather?
- Is it possible to watch my videos (iMac) in my Sony LCD?

If yes, what do I have to do?

You'll need some kind of digital media device.

TV is the easy option because of its integration with the Apple product line.

(I've read that) both Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 work well in combination with some software. For Playstation 3 you'll need MediaLink while for Xbox 360 there's Connect360.

You may also get it working with a Windows-based device but I haven't read into that.

It depends on what other stuf you have and what you are willing to buy. There are lots of different options:
- connect your ipod to your receiver with a mini to RCA Y cable.
- get an airport express that does the same as above, but you don't have to schlep your ipod to the TV every time you want to listen to music
- do you have a playstation 3? It plays xvid, vidx and mp4 files. They look awesome btw
- by far, Apple TV is the simplest solution as it will wirelessly connect to your shared itunes and play all your digital media with a nice front row like interface. You can get a refurb Apple TV for about $200 on the Canadian Apple refurb page
- I have also tried the Iomega screenplay drive. It is a regular external hard drive with RCA and component media connections. It will play mpeg, avi, audio, and video_ts folders

I'd recommend the AppleTV for what you've suggested, especially if you don't already have an xbox or ps3. The only warning is that the videos you watch on your iMac MUST be able to be played with iTunes to be streamed. So if you're watching videos in Quicktime, VLC, etc etc just make sure that iTunes can play them as well. It will be a huge disappointment if you get the AppleTV and can't watch your videos. (They can be converted to an appropriate format, it just takes time).

That medialink looked promising as the PS3 found it right away. The only thing that would play was music though. I had the same experience with an NAS. The PS3 would always see the server and the folders but it could never play the media. If you brought the same file on a pen drive to the PS3 it would play it no problem.

If I have a video that I downloaded from internet (not form iTunes), it wouldnt play on TV?

How can I convert the video to play on TV?

My wife has an Ipod Touch and I have a mini RCA Y cable, but haven't hooked it up yet. This will allow me to play anything on her Ipod through my stereo receiver, correct?

Also, since the Ipod is WIFI, wouldn't I be able to access her iTunes library that is on my iMac?

Yes... any audio files.

I had never tried this and I just looked at my touch to see if it could access my whole library. I can't find a way to do this, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible,

Yes. As long as you are sharing your iTunes on the local network, this will work. It's nice because you even see the album thumbnails.
