Ok in the next few months I will probably be looking to get a new Intel Mac and the iMac seems the obvious choice. On my desk I have a vaio which has a nice large screen however the only Mac in my room is a ibook which I use as my main machine really these days and 1024 x 768 is a pain to work with as a main machine.

Anyway so basically I wana get myself a desktop mac to use for a range thing things. I would think a Imac would have the power anyway for what I want.

My question is and it's probably a stupid one and certainly not a question with a definant answer. However the imac in it's current giuse has bee around a while so I would think it would be upgrade soon? Taking into account mac trends how likly is it to get an upgrade any time soon?

I know that as apple constantly inovate you kinda just got to buy when you need to and not bother waiting as you just end up waiting forever! But if we are talking a few weeks after a purchse bit of a pain. Probably won't have the money anyway for a month or two.

You gave the answer most will have. If you dont need it, and you will only have the money in a few months wait, but I think they will anyway only upgrade the imac in a few months anyway.
 
I believe the current word is they will probably update the iMac next month. At least I hope so, I'm in the market for an iMac as well!
 
Im desperate for a new imac beacuse my G4 is veeeery slow. Ill probably wait till Macworld in January though, I hope they do redesign the intel imac beacuse it looks a bit boring now.

I sadly am in the same position as you... I have the money, but I cant buy the iMac and have a new updated one come out a week later... come on steve just update it already!:(
 
I'm also very interested in an iMac, and am thus also very interested to know if/when they will be updated and with what.

As I understand it (please tell me where I am wrong), the current iMacs use Yonah, an Intel Core Duo chip, which was designed for laptops. Is there a desktop version that Apple decided not to use?

There is coming soon (or there already is?) a newer chip called the Core 2 Duo which comes in both a desktop and laptop version. The desktop version is called Conroe, and the laptop version is called Merom.

So, I know there is very rarely inside information available, but by getting more information, I am thinking I can make a more informed decision.

Have the Core 2 Duo chips been released, if not, when will they be? Will the iMac use the laptop or desktop version, or which is it expected to? If there was a desktop version of the Core Duo (Yonah), why didn't Apple use it in the iMac to begin with?

If you guys know this information it would help me a lot!! Thanks.

The Core 2 Duo chips have just been released in the last two weeks but haven't shipped in large enough volumes so they aren't being sold commercially yet since no one has enough of them. They'll be appearing in computers sold on the market by the end of the month.


There is no desktop version of the Core Duo, it's a mobile chip.

There's three versions of Core 2 Duo- there's Merom, the laptop version, Conroe, the desktop version, and Woodcrest, which is sold under the Xeon name but is still the same architecture and is basicly the ultimate version designed for workstations and servers. Woodcrest came out a month before the other two, and is being used in the Mac Pro.

Merom is launching at the exact same price point as Yonah, and Yonah will be dropping in price. So the new Merom processors at a higher speed cost the same as the slower Yonah's used to cost.

I'm in the exact same position as you. My PC is running like crap and I want a new computer, I can't stand Windows anymore. I want my iMac. But I'm not buying it with Core 2 Duo this close...

I'm actually hoping a Core 2 Duo iMac (preferably Conroe) will be out BEFORE Mac Expo Paris. I can't imagine why Apple would wait longer than Mac Expo Paris though.
 
I too am hoping for an imac update at the paris expo. Whats killing me also is the deal for students. Wait to see what happens and not get a nano or get a free nano... ummm...
 
I wonder if no keynote at Apple Expo diminishes the chances of an iMac update soon. Hope not.

I am pretty anxious about when this will come out because Apple is replacing my eMac free of charge with an iMac. I have a month to send in my eMac at which point they will send me the iMac, and I am hoping if a newer iMac is out by then that is the one they will send me.
 
Add me to the list of people who would really enjoy to see an iMac update sometime soon. I have really enjoyed my G5 iMac, but it just doesn't cut it for what I need anymore.

I want a silent (or at least a much quieter system, since my G5 revs up way too loud when I watch youtube videos even) system that runs Windows. I figure a Conroe iMac maxed out with 2gb of ram would be very nice for gaming under windows, and a great increase in performance all around.

For anybody else contemplating an iMac, I must say that even though the iMac G5 I have is rather loud (it's a revision A, the only revision that had this problem really from what I've heard), I would highly recommend them for their great performance and beautiful monitors. /salesman mode
 
I'd love to see an iMac refresh soon too, but the reality is that I'll probably hold off buying for another 6 months (plus or minus a couple) until it comes pre-loaded with Leopard (why pay the extra $149) ... and who knows, maybe I'll be getting it after the next speed bump if I wait that long.

Ideally I'd like to see a bit of a more dramatic redo of the iMac. I love the current format, but I think they rushed the first Intel iMac to market as part of their initial transition, and that they really intended to offer a new package with the new processor. I'm hoping for at least the option of a larger screen (maybe 21 or 23 inch), the ability to pivot the screen, and maybe an all-black version (like the MacBook ... also a consumer machine).

Guess we'll see soon enough :rubbing hands together gleefully:

I think the update that we'll see in a month or so will simply add a Core 2 Duo without much other changes. Hopefully, there will be a new case design with a Winter update that also adds Santa Rosa. I'm standing faithfully by my Rev A G4 iMac until you can get an iMac with a BD player. I might have to wait a year, but the longevity of a Mac is nothing short of a miracle. I know my current machine can't play modern games, but it does all the menial tasks asked of it without too many beachballs.

Yeah! I thought I was the only one who misses the G4. I remember when it was on Time Magazine... but seriously that would be awesome.
 
Add me to the list of people waiting for an updated iMac before buying. I've sold my PC and am now using my iBook as my main machine. The Core Duo 2 chips have had such great reviews that I think they're worth waiting for.

No Mac has ever topped the beauty of the Cube IMO. An updated Cube would be amazing, surely Apple could do it? Actually, I guess the Mini is kind of the spiritual successor to the Cube.

Flash sucks on OS X. The processor usage for it just spikes to 100% It's not your G5 directly. My Core Duo hasn't broken 125 F. It's whisper quiet ripping DVD's.

And yes...I game under Windows.
 
I'd wait. IMO the new imacs will have Conroe, not Merom, which will represent a significant upgrade over the current machines. Even if it's Merom that will be a slight improvement, and will probably have a better graphics card and other goodies. The way I see it, waiting a month (or so) will get you a machine that lasts you 6 months longer (or more) on the other end.

There's someone on these here forums wanting to take a Mac Mini and stick it into an iMac G4 case. He was wanting the video pin readout of the monitor to connect to the mini.

At least I THINK he's from these forums...
