Hi, I recently purchased an iMac i5 and for the first week it run perfectly with regards to the wireless internet. But then and ever since My wireless internet keeps cutting off, and a little box appears stating that my IP address is been used by another device, my iPhone 4. When this happens the wireless on the imac won't re-connect or anything, so I have to reset my router every time this happens, which is now everyday! its so frustrating, I don't know what to do? I was contemplating buying a really long ethernet cable and use that on my imac, but surely there has to be a solution to this? is it possible to assign IP address's to individual devices permanently instead of my router self assigning them?

as mentioned I'm using an imac i5, iPhone 4 and also a Netgear DG834GT (with the latest firmware)

Please help (in detail), this is getting very annoying

Your router should serve up different addresses to each device using DHCP. Generally the device should hold on to that address based on the length of time set in the router for it to hold that address. I am thinking that someone has tinkered with that setting. The other problem could be if the router does not have a large enough pool of addresses to hand out. A third consideration would be if you have turned off DHCP in the iMac and have hard coded an IP Address that is in the range of the pool of available addresses in the router.

if all else fail, you can manually put in the TCP/IP info into the iMac, just as long as you keep the IP address outside of the range of the DHCP pool, but within the same subnet.

Ok I think iv got it! discovered "LAN IP SETUP" in Netgear admin section, and reserved the IP address' for my imac & iPhone! Feel stupid now for asking on here lol :)

Go to System Prefrences>Network>Airport>Advanced>TCP/IP>Change Configure ipv4 to manual>Enter desired IP for your iMac>Click OK
