Image Browsers

Hi,

Does anyone know of any good file-based image browsers such as Adobe Bridge or the Browse facility in Photoshop Elements? I have a huge folder full of images that aren't catalogued in iPhoto and want a better way to find what I'm looking for rather than guessing based on the filename. Most of the image browsers I've tried so far need you to import your pictures into it and I just want something that will generate thumbnails of the files in the folder so I can see what I want.

This is (I hate to say it) somewhere where Windows XP did well, at least it automatically generated picture thumbnails when you entered a folder full of pictures (if there is a similar feature in OS X that I'm missing please enlighten me!)

I don't have Photoshop Elements or the Adobe Suite so can't use them, but I've seen there image browser in action and it's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for.

Open a finder window containing your images. Press Command+1 for Icon view. Press Command+J. Check Show Icon Preview.

Hi, if you click and hold Option+Command and drag over your preview icon in the Dock it will open a Preview window with all your pics in thumbnail in the drawer!

As Lacero said, just change the 'View' settings for those folder in Finder. If you navigate to it in Finder, you can click on the icon view button at the top of the window (it's the one with four squares in a square) and you'll get thumbnails.

If you want to see thumbnails regardless of your view (so even teeny weeny ones), you can use a little application such as Pinki which creates a mini thumbnail in the resource fork.

If you want a better view of your images and you're using Tiger, then you can use the built-in slideshow organiser. Just highlight the images and choose Slideshow from the right (control) click menu - from there you can view them as an index card, send them to iPhoto, trash them or rate them. V useful
