I dont know if this has come up already but...

I have noticed a disturbing problem with my iPad. After I have had the onscreen keyboard up while typing for a while the image of the keys remains visible as a soft outline on the screen for a while after.

I can recreate this problem at will, it is not particularly disruptive and doesn't bother me to much but it is an interesting one to see if it is wide spread.

To test try the following

Have the keyboard on the screen for a few minutes then switch to something such as a photo or app with a solid colour background and you will see the outline of the keyboard,

I find that dark grey seems to show it up worst the background colour when starting pulse reader shows it up really bad every time I use it, so I suggest a dark grey as an easy test.

Anyway sorry if this has already been mentioned, possibly a huge deal to some people but not too bad for me unless it get worse of course.

Are you 100% certain that's it's not your eyes?

Like that thing where you stare at a dark picture for 30 seconds then look at a white background and the image is still visible.

Are you using it while you're doing this test or looking away then coming back to it?

Edit: I just stared at the keyboard for about 45 seconds and looked at my wall, it appeared there too.

That was my first thought so I tried different amounts of time with not looking at the screen etc then I thought of the obvious... Turn the iPad upside down and discovered that the keyboard outline then appears on the top and has in theory got to be to do with the screen.

Yes, I can confirm what the OP is speaking of. I had it happen to me, however it doesn't seem consistent. It should go away if you just turn the screen off for a couple of minutes.

Yes this is exactly what happens with mine, the only real concern I have is that as time goes on it may become a longer lasting or even permanent image on the screen, oh well we'll have to see how it unfolds. It would be interesting to see apples stance on this but I am not that bothered to find out just yet!

Burnard

I'm not sure it's actually possible to get burn in on an LCD display.

Burn in used to happen on CRT and Plasma screens because of the way they work. CRTs use rays to excite phosphors which degrade over time and plasmas... well they use plasma which again degrades over time.

LCDs use crystals which are either on or off. There is nothing to degrade. The crystals actually rotate to allow light through or to block light to produce black, the light comes from a back light behind the LCD display.

So unless the iPad has a very slow refresh rate or for some reason does not always clear the screen before showing the next image, you shouldn't see this kinda thing!!

Just had a look on the Apple site and while you don't get Burn-in you can have a similar thing on LCD, they call this image persistence - It shouldn't be a problem long term but they also offer solutions to fix it, so I'll leave it as an exercise for you to follow up if you want.

Yes you can get screen burn in, but it's not permanent. If you shut the screen off for a few minutes it will go away. You would have to leave the screen on for weeks to get damaging burn in.
