Seen numerous postings on this subject, and tried all the proposed solutions (updated OSX iOS, reset privacy settings, reboots, stopping Dropbox/OneDrive, ...) still nothing appears. This used to work smoothly, and only since a year or so it fails. Have tried commercial software in demo versions, who seem to be able to get to the photos, so it must be something with Image Capture itself. Anybody who has a magic wand solution to get this solved once and for all?

The phone is recognised, I do get to see the message that photos are being prepared, and then after a while that message disappears and no pictures are shown. Phone shows connected. Even after multiple hours being connected. No error messages thrown.

A couple of things that you could try are to start the Mac in Safe Mode and then try to run Image Capture. If that doesn't work, create a new user account and try again there.

What about using the Photos app to import from your iPhone? Does that work? Why not use iCloud sync?

There are lots of way to get your photos onto your Mac besides using Image Capture. If you still can't get Image Capture to work, call Apple Support and work with them.

Image Capture has all these features to make more complex selections based on different metadata on what to transfer and what to delete, which are not available in the other solutions.

ps: this is a brand new MacBook, close to out of the box, one day use.

Anything that could be wrong on the phone side?

besides that USB-related problems seems to be reduced in 12.5…
try:

disconnect the iPhone.

Set Autolock in the Display&Brightness preferences of your iPhone to "never".

Take a screenshot on the iPhone… this page maybe? 🤓 (seriously, take a screenshot.)

Reconnect it to your Mac.

Start Image Capture on your Mac.

Select a new folder to save your photos.

Click "Download All". Get a tea or coffee. 😎

When you set up your new MacBook did you do a migration from a previous system or did you set it up as new? Occasionally, a migration will transfer something over that causes issues on the new system.

Again, a call to Apple Support is warranted in this case. They are in a much better position to determine what is wrong.

Well, this seems to have done the trick. Don't understand the trick though. :) Is it the combi of no lock and screen dump? What does it 'reset'? Anyway, thanks a zillion !
