I noticed something when reviewing pics in the POTD thread.

When I post an image, I upload it from my hard drive using the “insert image” icon. I either drag the image to the little window or click on the window to open up a dialog box to search for the image I want to post.

The images I post then contain EXIF info that members can see if they click on my image in a post. So even if I don’t include shooting info in my post, members can see this info if they click on my image.

I’ve noticed that it isn’t possible to view EXIF info for some images posted here. I’m assuming this is because members have posted their pics via external links rather than uploading their images directly to the site.

I think it can be helpful to see the EXIF data for images posted. I don’t think every post needs to include the details of how the image was captured in the post itself. But it is nice to be able to see this info for specific images. If an image captures one’s fancy, the ability to click on the image and view the EXIF data can help you figure out how the poster captured that image—what gear did they use in a general sense? What exposure did they use?

I’m assuming the availability of EXIF data relates to how the image was uploaded to the site, but I could be wrong in this regard. Possible something else is at play.

But I think having EXIF data available for posted images is helpful.

Thoughts?

I know some of my export presets in LR are set to strip the exif out on export so they won’t have it but when I post here, I like to link to flickr normally and the exif info is all there other than a little skulduggery on M lenses with me where when using Zeiss or Voigtlander lenses I have to select the next closest Leica profile (which you know what I am talking about Kallisti).

Due to the file sizes I usually do not select “original size” but -depending on context - one of the other options in the upload/drop image-dialogue.

This not only reduces the size to something more “palpable“ 🤓 but additionally strips the EXIF, which I prefer for several reasons, e.g. I do not think that taking note of EXIF information like exposure time, ISO and aperture and replicating these values, allows to take similar photos - because there is normally no EXIF information of the development/image processing parameters (besides the program used) which resulted in the image posted.

If somebody wants to know how I took a specific photo or what gear I used, they’re welcome to ask 😎

It seems to behave unpredictably, as I post all my photos the same, and some times you can click on them and get the EXIF, and other times they can't be clicked on at all. The real head-scratcher is that it can even behave this way on the same post at different times, where one time you can click on it, and another time you cannot. Since I have no idea of if/when it will work, I try to post the basic EXIF info anyway. It was more traditional to post this in the POTD, but we kinda drifted away from it, so I've been trying to keep to the "rules." I still forget quite often!

I typically post photos directly to here, leave the EXIF intact when exporting from LR, and often mine still seem to show up without any...

Usually when I upload from the computer and use the attach files dialog the metadata is indeed there; I've never tried dragging-and-dropping an image to add it to a post here, nor do I make any attempt to conceal my EXIF info and metadata. Some people, though, do prefer to strip out that information or their editing software may strip it out, and that may be why it doesn't always show up here?

There are add-ons which can be bolted on to Xenforo, and a couple of photography-related forums in which I participate which also use Xenforo use an add-on program which displays the metadata/EXIF info right under the image that has been shared in a post so that when one is viewing that image they can also quickly and readily view the EXIF right then.

I've gotten lazy about providing the EXIF info when sharing posts on here and was happy when we began having the ability to see metadata with our images here. I also like the media function where I can quickly look at the images I've shared in the past to be sure I'm not duplicating one that I'd already posted!

That's the thing. I post exactly the same way every time, using Attach Files. I export the same way as well. The weird part is that a specific post will allow the ability to click on the photo one time (so you can get to the EXIF dialog), but not the next time you try it on the exact same post. I almost suspect that after a period of time, the photo gets archived and the EXIF goes with it. My point is that, however the system works, it is rather inconsistent. Most of my July photos I can't click on anymore.

Interesting replies all around. Some wonkiness seems to be going on with the site. Guess I need to explicitly share shooting data when posting (for images where it seems relevant—kind of what I do anyway).

I've been unable to dependably get EXIF data for a while now . No idea what's going on , can't even get my own data . So , usually I put my data below the image for all to hold up to ridicule , at least in the POTD thread.

Strange behavior on the site. I’ve had posts where I can’t click on the image and get meta-data and then with a page refresh I suddenly can. Weird.
