Taking notes on a touch screen, without the ability to quickly draw mathematical formulas along with the notes?

riding on a train.

So instead of pulling out a small laptop from your bag, you pull out a big iphone-like device from that same bag.

How is reading from a laptop any different from the ipad? And reading printed text is better for your eyes. And how are clients supposed to sit around the ipad to view your presentation? Lay it down on the table and let them stand close to each other and hover over it?


No hate here, just fail to see how your ideas and finding a use for this device are changing things for the better.

By the time this releases, all the crying nerds will have forgotten what they were angry about and go buy one anyhow. They just love to bash anything that is not "what they wanted" which are such unrealistic goals no company can match. Apple could have made the iPad with camera, flash, mutitasking, and thrown a free data plan on any carrier they wish. They would just cry more because it had no Bluray drive, USB, SD, doesn't do something they "MUST" have.

It's amazing how after the first 72 hours passed most of the "I hate", "hey look at me cause I'm mad Apple didn't make it for me" threads are all gone. The MS fanboi's all went back to find something else to do and the clueless rants were all shut up when they realized they should have at least watched the keynote before crying about all the missing things like a mic, wireless printing, file sharing, BT keyboard usage etc...

I think you should stop making sweeping generalizations. I've been vocal - not in a hateful way - that the iPad hold very little interest for me. It has nothing to do what expectations I had. It does have to do with features available and my usage. There are people on here who genuinely feel the iPad has little new to offer them in their current workflow. Could that change? Could a "reveal" of new features and benefits come before the launch date or after? Sure. And would this change opinions/usage - sure. That doesn't mean anyone is changing their tune the way YOU mean.

What it means is - the iPad AS DEMONSTRATED at the keynote wasn't what some people wanted/needed to find useful at this time. If a new version of OS is introduced, or things not showcased at the keynote are implemented - you can't criticize those that initially said they had no interest.

If I'm a vegetarian and a restaurant near me only serves meat - it wouldn't hold much interest for me, right? If the restaurant changes their menu one day and announces they now have salads, pastas, etc - of course I might be interested.

I definitely think there's some advantages and untapped potential with the iPad, provided its given the opportunity.

While I was not a member here at macrumors when the ipod or iphone came out, and people have made the allusion that similar negative talk came with those. I do remember the reception of the G4 cube and this is reminiscent of that.

I have no idea if the iPad will succeed or fail. I do see a lot of hate towards it which is weird. Usually the fanboys are out in force tripping over everything that apple does.

I'm leaning towards getting one (I'm about 80% sure I'll buy one) and the main reasons are similar to what the OP stated. I think the target market for the iPad is for those light surfing, light working moments where this device would be a good fit over a laptop or the iPhone. Its not meant to be a laptop replacement.

Did apple misstep on some of the design, I think so, I'm not one of those fanboys who trip over themselves The omission of multi-tasking and flash are the two biggest mistakes imo. Not big enough for me to avoid buying one. Heck, I rarely go to sites that require flash in the first place.

Should I wait for revision 2, like what others have stated, perhaps, but as it stands the iPad is a great device and I see no reason to hold off when it will make my life easier by using that over a laptop or my iPhone.
