Hi out there!

Last week I recieved my 27" iMac i7 2,93GHz with the 2TB Hitachi Drive.
I ordered this drive because it was said in this forum that this one should be silent.
Now, during access it is not really silent, but thats no problem
What bothers me more is, that there is a permament silent hum. An I can fell this vibration even on the stand (hopefully this is the correct term, I am from Austria, so english is not my native language).
And this vibration is also forwarded onto the table, but it is not really feelable on the table.

So my question is: Some say that their iMac is "dead silent". Mine isn´t, I also can here the fans silently, but that doesn´t bother me either. But this humming is somewhat distracting or annoying.
Maybe I am just to "picky", but do you really have iMacs which are almost inaudible?

Because I do not have any other problems I am not sure whether I should ask for a replacement.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Gerald

I've had two 27" iMacs with this exact problem with the same 2TB HD. Does your humming randomly stop sometimes? Because when it does stop thats how silent the iMac should be. Also do you hear something spin down 30 seconds after turning the iMac off, like a circular saw blade coming to a stop (tic...tic...tic...tic)?

The humming is almost always the same. Just after startup its almost not there, but after a few minutes its hearable.
But no tic tic or spindown. I know I could have replaced my iMac but everything else is just perfect, so I am a little worried. And the replacement has to be done within the first 14 days, problem is, I am on a business trip.

So you replaced your iMac 2 times and now its perfect?

Hard disks rotate, and thus, they hum. Try sitting your iMac on a thick towel (make sure it's stable, and not wobbly). Do you still hear the hum? I placed mine on a hand towel because I have a pretty crappy desk and it resonates quite loudly with any drive.

FWIW I replaced a 2009 with a WD Caviar Black (for other reasons) with a new 2010. The 2010 has the Seagate, sadly. I don't trust their reliability so much, but it's extremely quiet. The WD Caviar Black was much louder both at idle (the hum) and during writes (the grumbling). I don't have to use a hand towel any more. But the noise ever hardly bothered me. I've had a fan running all summer.
