iMessage - 2 phones, 1 apple ID

Hello, I hope this hasnt been covered. I looked but could not find anything.

My wife and I both have iPhone 4's. I just updated to iOS5 and she will soon. We both use the same apple ID so we can both use the same songs, apps, etc.

So with iMessage, will it differentiate between us? If I get a message that is iMessage will she also get it and visa versa? Maybe I am just not fully understanding this. As it is now, I dont have anyone that has updated so i havent gotten to use it anyways.

Thoughts? Help? Insults?

Use the same iTunes store email but create her a new email just for iCloud.

Yes, it will use your number first instead of your email. If someone uses your email then you guys both will get.

I believe you have the option to only receive them by phone number and not email. I don't know how that will affect chatting with iPads and iPod Touches though.

iPads and iPod Touches can send an iMessage to a phone number.

I tested on my mom's and my iphone 4.

Basically we have different iCloud accounts but use the same iTunes account.

I texted something to my phone from heres and it was in blue message (not green). So yes its does keep them separate.

You just have to turn iMessages on in settings.

ok cool. Imessage is working on my phone now that I got a hold of someone who has upgraded. just gotta upgrade the wifes now.

i usually try to get my wife to do the upgrades herself but she had an issue last night and got all frustrated. Im sure I will end up doing it for her tonight and she will just have to live with it. I know she will like the wireless syncing since I always seem to be stealing her cable.

Yes, this is right...you can go into settings and select "store" and put in the iTunes account you want to use. For calendar mail and contacts, go to the iCloud settings and put in your iCloud id.

I have my own iCloud but share my iTunes store login with my kids.

One day Apple will find a way to consolidate all our Apple IDs... Currently, we have IDs for mobil--er.. iCloud and various iTunes accounts...frustrating to remember...

I have a my me.com as my iCloud and a different apple ID for my store account with no problems on my iPhone 3GS.

If you change your Store ID, it changes your iCloud ID or vice versa?

Either way changes both Apple IDs to the same ID. The last change is the one that stays. So if I can the Apple ID for iCloud it update the Apple ID for the Store automatically and vice versa.

I tried changing my store ID, my iCloud remains the same. I realised, I've never used my me.com for a store ID though...that could be the reason?

That may be the reason. My wife accidentally registered this e-mail address as an Apple ID for the Store.

Not true.
I use a different ID for iTunes than I do for iCloud.
The initial setup will automatically set both to the same, but you can go and change the iTunes ID after setting up iCloud and your iCloud ID will remain untouched.
