I have iMessage set up on my iPhone and my iPad 2. There doesn't seem to be a way to have my messages appear across both devices at the same time. If I get a message to my phone number, it only goes to my iPhone and if my email address gets a message, it only goes to my iPad.

I have my iPhone iMessage set up to receive messages at both my cell phone number and my email address, yet it only picks up the messages to the phone number and the iPad only picks up message send to the email address.

Anyone have any advice?

yup, looks like thats how its gonna be. My buddy and i have been testing, shows up under email, and even when you add that email to the persons contact (we both have iOS 5) it still shows up as 2 different threads. no way to merge them, and obviously the condo thread doesn't transfer either. lame. gonna have lots of different threads from the same people

Also need to change the receive at settings on the iPhone to receive when sent to your email address. Then if you always send via your email addresses it will show up on both devices.

so it seemed to fix the problem, but my friend who is also using both his iPad and iPhone to iMessage, his conversations show up as two different chat windows in the sms app. And my conversations show up as two chat windows on his phone. when i reply in the chat window that makes me recieve messages on both iPhone and iPad, he only receives on his phone. And the chat window that he replies to on his phone that makes the messages go to his iPad and iPhone, only come to my phone.

I think this is because you are sending from your phone number. I don't think there is a way to change your "sent" from your phone number to your email address.

I think at this point, we're reading too much into the setup of it all.

I've been having trouble trying to link my iMessages all day, using every combination of settings and each times something different happens: I'd receive it only on on device, multiple threads for both parties, and instance where it'd work perfectly for both parties and then go back to multiple threads from different sources. That being said, I think it's issues on the back end.

As long as you're logged in to iMessage with your Apple ID on both devices, they should be linked and that's all you have to do.

All this mess about setting the caller ID to point to wherever doesn't matter.

I've been wondering if Apple isn't having issues, and if they are related to the iCloud issues. I was receiving just fine on both my iPad and iPhone up until about noon today. Now I receive almost nothing on my iPad (3G, always connected).

My understanding was that if you are signed in you are signed it; it shouldn't matter which ID the message is sent to. I think Apple is having problems.

It just started working properly a few minutes ago.

Bump.

I'm having similar issues. I was under the impression that iMessage would take care of all the work for you, and sync up the conversation threads across all iOS devices without having to tweak settings. It doesn't seem to be occurring that way.

It's working OK for me. Last night I even sent a message to a phone number from my iPad and it delivered just fine.

I did notice that after the issues I was having yesterday, I had to initiate the conversation (thread) from my iPad. For some reason, after that any iMessage message sent to/from either my iPad or iPhone arrives and shows on both.

General -> Reset -> Reset Network settings.

Fixes the problem with the syncing.

Just did it and it worked like a charm.

I seem to have it working by setting the caller ID as the owner's iCloud email address across all of the devices. My girlfriend has an iPad and an iPhone, and our conversations are synced across her 2 devices and my iPhone.

For the people that have it working...

Is that what you did as well?

I did not and since last night it has been working great for me.
