I bit the bullet and went to Sierra from Mavericks finally since so much was not working with Mavericks-things like dropbox, chrome, and a few other key programs.

However since day one, iMessage has acted strangely. First, all conversations showed only about a day’s worth of messages. Then, sometimes when I started up iMessage, only two or three conversations showed. And the conversations are very leggy to load up sometimes with a new iMessage launch.

Has anybody else seen this inconsistency with Sierra?

Which Mac are you running this on? And which generation Mac is it?

I believe that that Mac is supported up through Mojave as well. Regardless, it may be a software glitch and you might have to backup your files, erase your drive, and reinstall you macOS. I would first try upgrading to Mojave and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks. I intentionally chose Sierra. Mojave would require me to purchase hundreds of dollars in new software (Logic Express 9, photoshop suite CS3, others). That’s too hard a pill to swallow. I just installed Sierra fresh and this issue appeared from the start.

Understandable. Unfortunately I don’t really know what to tell you then if you’ve installed it fresh. Maybe there is a block on your Apple ID for iMessage. Are you having any trouble with FaceTime? If so, that may be the case. I’d recommend contacting Apple support and relaying your problem to them and see what they advise.
