I need some help! I have a 16 inch MBP running 11.1. I am very much against creating a fresh user, I have a ridiculous amount of effort I have put into getting all my preferences and dot files configured the way I want them. I am convinced there is some preference file or cache that is causing me pain that needs to be cleared out.

I have worked through the following troubleshooting steps:
  1. Logged out of iCloud completely
  2. Restarted, logged in to iCloud etc. back to square one.
  3. Cleared out related keychain items such as com.apple.facetime etc etc
  4. Restarted, logged in to iMessage, and back to square one.
  5. Changed my iCloud Password
  6. Restarted, logged in to iMessage, and back to square one.
  7. Cleared out keychain items again
  8. Restarted, logged in to iMessage, and back to square one.
  9. Completely nuked everything in the folder in ~/Library/Messages
  10. Restarted, logged in to iMessage, and back to square one.
  11. Go to other devices that are logged into iCloud, then log out and back in on each one. (iPad, Mac Pro, iPhone etc.)
  12. Restarted, logged in to iMessage, and back to square one.
Pulling my hair out at this point. iMessage works flawlessly on my iPad, iPhone, Mac Pro on Catalina... I enter my login credentials and then the iMessage window pops up and within seconds goes back to the login. Does anybody have any ideas?

It also appears I am not alone.
Apple Support was absolutely worthless.

Closing the loop on this, Apple had to unblock the Mac in question on the iCloud server side. If anyone else runs into this head ache contact Apple Support and specifically ask about being unblocked.

Thank you very much for closing the loop. After following all the guidance and doing everything possible to reset it myself, I called Apple knowing what the rep would need to do make things work. You saved me so much time and headache. Thank you again!

You're welcome :)

Guess Apple support was helpful after all (and not “absolutely worthless” as in your first post).
