iMessage and Older Texts

Ok, so my friend, who keeps every single text he's ever recieved, says that iMessage doesn't integrate...which I can only translate as it doesn't merge with the old texts from before the update. Anyone else notice this or is it a glitch? I'm trying to tell him what to do, as he's now turned iMessage off, which kinda defeats the purpose.

the old texts stay the same, they are in green, the imessage texts continue on and are in blue

Could it be because I had my caller id in iMessage as an email instead of my phone number? Something tells me that's the issue.
