I carry two iPhones, and am not ready to move to eSim just yet. I have both my phone numbers set up for iMessage. My XS is my primary iPhone, so anyone who sends me a regular SMS to the secondary iPhone - text message forwarding is set up to go to my XS, my iPad, and my Mac.

Ever since I moved to the iPhone Xs (I can reproduce this on the Xr as well), I will receive the green text messages to my Xs, iPad, and Mac. However, from my XS only, I cannot reply to the message. See attached screen shot. I can reply with my mac and even the new iPad pro that just came out.

I did a fresh iOS install on all my devices, reset network settings, etc, but at this point I am lost. I reported the issue to Apple as well, but haven't gotten a response yet. Was hoping iOS 12.1.1 contained a fix. Nothing.

Ive reported this to Apple when the Max first came out, they told me a couple of months ago that after i reported it a bunch of other people did too, theres no ETA to a fix but they said it will be fixed in an upcoming update.

You may try a work around which has been working in groups with 2 different phones for me and it seems to work with eSIM as well.

Use email (e.g. AppleID or one which is registered as trusted email in AppleID) and select in the iMessage settings the email as "Start new conversations from" on both devices.
