iMessage charging

Hi guys has any one checked their phone bill? I sent an iMessage. It was a photo and a video to my cousin. It was blue and sent via iMessage. I then noticed I had extra charges on my bill. The only explanation I can come up with is if you're in an area of poor 3G. The iMessage may fail and then go over MMS. Be carefull make sure you don't get a huge bill!

Miles is correct. When your in the iMessage setting there is a "Send as SMS" which is Send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable.

I am loving the iMessage
 
But if it is sent as SMS/MMS because iMessage failed, wouldn't the message be displayed as green ?

I could be wrong here as it's been a while since I've not had MMS but I think that if you have MMS turned off and someone sends you a photo (or other media via text), you get a text containing a link to view the photo (or whatever) on the web.

there isn't really a turn off sms option, its turn off fallback to sms...you can still send and receive sms messages to non-iphone users....but it won't slip an sms on you without your knowledge.
 
I just today checked mine and found out why there was an error.

I upgraded my 3Gs to iOS5 and gave it to my wife without contacting AT&T. At the same time I had bought my new 4s which of course came with iOS5.

According to the guy at AT&T support, they needed to switch her 3Gs data plan over to the 4s Data Plan. There's no difference except in how it's billed internally. He said many but not all people upgrading are calling in with similar issues. According to him, he just didn't know but is pretty sure there's a good reason. Heck, for all I know, I missed a step in the whole upgrade process, I don't do anything but follow along with the onscreen prompts from Apple's install.

In the end, he credited my bill, reset her plan to reflect the iOS4 data plan and then recalculated the current statement. I logged off AT&T online and logged back in with him on the phone and viola, my iMessages to her were indeed not being allocated as regular texts. I also show the $30 credit from last month
