iMessage does receive messages on mac

I am logged in my computer with the same iMessage login as my phone but I do not see my messages on my Mac when someone messages me. I think that the only ones that would show are from other iPhones with iMessages enabled correct? I still don't even receive those.

I do not have the lates Mac OS but the one before that maverick I think. Is that the problem? My phone is on the latest iOS.

Mac OS needs to be updated

I updated to latest Mac OS. Still I don't receive iMessage texts to my Mac with my same iCloud login. What else could be wrong. I toggled iMessages off on my phone for a few seconds and then back on again to see if that would fix it but it didn't.
