My friend and I have the same exact Apple products and we have finished updating them. (MacBook Pro with Lion, iPad 1 WiFi, iPhone 4 for AT&T.) We are already liking the iMessage feature, especially how it knows you are sending an iMessage instead of a text. Cool stuff. But he just tried sending me an iMessage from his iPad while he was at work in his work WiFi to me on my iPhone. And it didn't go through.

I'm pretty sure iMessage works with both WiFi and 3G, so why didn't it go thru? I do have trouble with my AT&T signal, so it's possible that he sent the message when I didn't have WiFi and my AT&T signal was bad or missing. But my friend thinks it should have gone thru and appeared whenever I was back "online" like a text message.

So I guess my question is, do you have to be "live" for it to work, sortof like iChat?
