Hey guys,
Just checking this was how it is rather than just my devices.

If a friend messages my phone number, it goes to my iPhone. If that same friend messages my Apple ID email, it goes to my iPad AND my iPhone. When I message my friend from my iPhone, it shows up as from my phone number. When I message him from my iPad, it shows up in a new message thread (from my Apple ID email).

Since all your info is registered to the same iCloud address, why doesn't it sync everything inc. your phone number iMessages? Gonna get pretty annoying searching through each device for certain messages and pretty confusing for the recipient of my message who have 2 message threads for me (and same for message from them).

Is this just me or is everyone experiencing this?

if you go under your messages setting, you can select if you want the message to go to your apple id or not. what i did was took my apple id off for my iphone so this way, my apple id imessages only go to my ipad.

Yeah, I saw that. What I'd like (and thought was what iMessage was going to do) is for all my messages to go to both. So, have my Apple ID see that my phone number is xxxxxxxxxxxxx and have messages sent to my iPhone sync to my iPad too. The way it is is going to cause a lot of jumping back and forth.

I made a couple of extra me.com accounts today so I can give each device their own "address" for iMessage in an effort to avoid this very problem.

I only made the email addresses. I didn't set them up to do contacts, etc. So far, so good.

How does that solve my problem? My phone # messages still don't show up on my iPad. I end up with 2 message threads per person. Big oversight.

p.s: aside from that, awesome messaging system.

Would you want a separate ID for the iPad and iPhone? That's about the only way I was any help. :)

Do you have the option selected to "send as SMS" on your iPhone? I assume that's why they are seeing your phone number and it's not going to your iPad.

Hey,

I posted the same thing earlier, I am having the same issue.

Not that this is any help to either of us!

Just wanted to piggyback it by saying I was expecting the same functionality.... friend/family member sends a message, both devices are supposed to receive it (or all devices depending on how many you have).

Then you can reply from either one and the one not in use continues to receive the messages so it is up to date in the event you want to switch devices and continue the conversation.... that, to me, was the whole beauty of iMessage.

Now, I don't want to start any conversation on my iPad, cause then if someone replies, i may not have it on me to respond! But, I would probably have my phone!!!

Very frustrated.

This and the fact I don't get my Photo Stream on my Mac yet... but iMessage more.

I think you all can do what you guys are trying to do, you just have to tell the other person to send the iMessage to your iCloud account and not your phone number.

Also, I haven't tried this yet, but change your caller ID in Messages to be your email address instead, that way when your friends reply, it will automatically go to any device setup with that ID.....

I agree though it would be great if iMessage could see that you have a phone number and an email address and direct iMessages incoming to your phone number to the other devices that are setup with the email address only.

you know, I think Apple is going to encounter a lot of confused customers. I think I understand it all, but it is very confusing.

Apple ID's, iCloud, MobileMe, old iTunes store accounts.....Apple, please let us merge Apple ID's!

I think you may be on to something. Good suggestion!

nevermind.

I see the problem now. I thought I was immune to it. :)

I can even duplicate the issue just sending messages to myself on one device.

My iPad is still updating, but if this is true... doesn't this kinda defeat the whole purpose of iMessage?
I don't want to have to tell people my Apple ID and have a separate flow going than normal texts. I want them just combined into one.

I figured it out.

Set your iPhone caller id to just your email and make sure people respond do it rather than sending it to your email. Just sending it to your email will have it appear on both devices. It's dumb, but itll work for now.

But will texts to people with non-iPhones still work fine?
