this started today.
Today my sister and i (who have separate accounts and don't live near each other) have been having some interesting issues with iMessage in particular.
-when sending messages i sometimes have to hit re-send 2-3 and sometimes more times before it goes through. (message send failure)
-not getting delivery status updates.
-when in chat with someone else, instead of just updating my chat with someone my phone notifies me i have a new message. i then have to back out to the text message list and re-click the person I'm already talking to before i can scroll down and see what the new message is.
-inability to send picture,video messages.
-sends iMessage as text message instead.

in my sisters case, her phone won't connect to iCloud and update. her phone is going slow, dropping calls etc. resetting doesn't fix the problem. also, the people which I'm using iMessage are using iOS 5, are on at&t, have iMessage etc enabled.

To me it seems to be an AT&T 3G network issue, when I switch to my AT&T Uverse Internet (WiFi), I have no issue.

I have iMessage problems too

I have had problems with iMessage twice now.

In the first instance, a friend of mine received an iMessage text from me of three periods (...) that I did not send.

In the second instance, I was iMessaging with one of my family members, and an unknown third party interjected into our conversation saying that he was receiving our texts. We were able to correspond with him in the thread, and all three parties were able to communicate. The unknown third party gave me his phone number (in the iMessage thread), and the number was unknown to either me or the person I was messaging with, but he was located in the same city that I was. F

or now, I have turned iMessage off and am sticking with SMS/MMS. Anyone else experience anything similar?

Are you sure the three periods wasn't just the indicator that you were typing?
Regarding your other issue, have you sold a phone running iOS 5 recently? There have been a couple of different posts about people who have sold their phone and their number has still been tied to their old phone. So both phones get the iMessages.
