I was talking to a friend about going to New York to see Hamilton, when I typed the name "Lin-Manuel Miranda" and sent it on a message I noticed the name was underlined which seemed a bit odd so I decided to tap on it, a window showed with a "quick search" on Lin-Manuel showing links to Wikipedia, Lin's website and web videos, idk if this has been talked about before but I've never seen iMessage do anything like this before. It seems very similar to what Google implemented on Android called Google on Tap, has anyone else seen this?

Here are some screenshots to show you guys

I tried it again with more names and it seems like only music related names work. Beyoncé's "quick search" shows a link to Apple Music too

Does that mean Apple is constantly scanning people's iMessages?

It's all part of the new "in line" stuff and Rich Texts.

Like being able to play videos (such as YouTube links) directly from the conversation without having fun to leave Messages. Same for Music. If someone links something from Apple Music you can listen to it without leaving.

It has to do with universal search like Search on the home screen.

So this is an extension of the limited capability in ios9 to do this (pretty much limited to flight info for select airlines if you put in the airline name and flight number). Looks like this will be expanding, which will be a very nice feature

Yeah it's a nice feature hopefully it does expand and allows other searches like places and stuff.... I tried with words like Starbucks, Chase bank, Walmart and it didn't work. However, it worked with the movie The Revenant

What would be very nice is if it popped up showtimes for movies, or is that further down in your linked page?

Will developers have access to these searches? So apps like Fandango could provide link thru's that would be neat. Don't Google results show Google's content? Not sure where its aggregated from.

Just discovered that if you long press the links, you get more options. Poor man's 3D Touch!

Looking further into this. It seems it's tied to the new "Look Up" feature of iOS 10.

Highlight anything and you will get a lookup and very similar screen as the screenshots you see in this thread from Messages.

(Screenshot 1 is highlighted the word Google and shows Look Up. Screenshot 2 is in the Look Up screen which is identical to what you get in Messages. For Messages it just seems to automatically create a Look Up link for some things.)

I agree, but the automatic nature of the active links is quite compelling.
